A Brief History...

Bank Hall was first built in 1608 by the Banastre Family who had been evicted from their family seat in North Wales. (Parts of this building exist today but is now the central part of the house and is hidden by the later extensions in 1832/33).

Bank Hall passed through the many generations developing and in 1832/33 the owner (a descendant from the Banastre Family) George Anthony Legh Keck extended Bank Hall and made major developments to the building and grounds which is pretty much how it is today.

The Clare Family 1899- 1922

Sir Harcourt Clare and Family where residents at Bank Hall from 1899-1922. Sir Harcourt moved to Bank Hall with his wife Clara and his daughter (their only child) Dorothy ("Dolly") after he had been promoted to be the Clerk to Lancashire County Council in 1899. Sir Harcourt who was knighted in 1916, would walk two miles every morning to Croston Station from Bank Hall and then carry on from Preston train station to work.

The family where known for keeping a large number of pekinese dogs which where looked after by a Mr Pritchard. The family had a high involvement in the local village life and often organised events for the villagers. The Clare Family are all buried next to each other in the graveyard at the Parish church in Bretherton.

There are three headstones in the shape of a cross, the first nearest the church is of Sir Harcourt and reads

"In Memory of
 Sir Harcourt Everard Clare.KT.
Died March 1st 1922
In His Sixty-Eighth Year"
